2007 GSXR 600
A friend on a trip to France on a VFR750 once noticed how hot his regulator was running - just checking things over at a petrol stop. He wanted to call the RAC immediately. Instead we found a Honda dealer who very helpfully gave it the full test and said 'all OK - yes you can burn your finger on one if you keep it there!'

The bike in question is a 2007 Suzuki GSXR 600 with 10.5k miles . My VRR actually caught on fire, causing a current surge which burnt the 30A fuse on the bike. Checking the stator, .3 Ohms resistance between all coil leads, all leads to ground are open, or infinite resistance, as spec'd by the manual. I opened up the stator cavity to get a visual inspection, no issues. No burnt coils, looks pristine to me.
After finally replacing the VRR, I went out for a nice long 3ish hour or so ride in ~55ºF weather. Towards the end, I pulled over to get gas, and as soon as I got into the gas station the bike just shut off.
I felt the VRR with my hand, and holy crap that thing was hot. The bike refused to turn over, a lot like when you've got a dead battery. The display on the dash was doing all kinds of crazy shit.
I called for a tow and sat there for about an hour or so. Everything cooled off, and I was able to get it started again. The dash returned to normal. It kinda was cranking just a little, so some throttle encouragement fired it back up. Ran perfectly normal for the half hour ride home. The dash looked nice and clean, just like it did when it had a fresh battery in it and everything.
Now I'm grabbing the multimeter and heading out to do some more testing to see if I can isolate the problem.
My questions for you:
• Could the bike have failed just because of the overheated VRR?
• Would my battery need replaced after the VRR caught fire, due to some surging in the system, or should it have been protected by the 30A main fuse?
• Is mounting the VRR somewhere other than between the radiator and header pipes (nice engineering design Suzuki, smh.) really enough to keep it cool and protected in the future?
